HX Expeditions will kick off the largest kayaking and camping program in Antarctica this fall with an 188% increase in kayaking capacity and double the camping spots (up to 60 guests per night).

“We’re not just adding more spots, we’re reimagining how guests experience Antarctica,” said Karin Strand, vice president of expeditions development. “With expanded kayaking and camping capacity, plus greater flexibility and access – we’re opening the polar regions to more adventurers than ever before.”

“It’s about making these once-in-a-lifetime moments available to everyone on board, while delivering them in small, intimate, and responsible groups… And importantly, all experiences are designed in harmony with nature and in strict adherence to the environmental regulations that govern human activity in Antarctica.”

Another change to both programs will be expanding solo traveler access. A partner will no longer be a requirement to participate in kayaking or camping.

Additionally, the line’s former lottery system will be replaced by a first-come, first-served system, with a pre-booking system under development for future systems.

As part of the expansion, HX will offer two kayaking types and two camping styles, along with snowshoeing, a polar plunge, and expanded hikes (when available).

HX’s Kayaking Options

Discovery Kayaks: Developed by HX in partnership with two water sports equipment specialists – NRS (Northwest River Supplies) in the U.S. and Escape Watersports in the UK – these solo, inflatable kayaks allow for a closer-to-the-water experience. They are ideal for calm conditions, giving guests the ability to paddle at their own pace in a specific pre-determined location while monitored by safety boats. (Price: 129 euros)

Sea Explorer Kayaks (Hard Shell): Hard-shell kayak trips are guided by two expedition guides and are generally longer-range paddle excursions. These are two-person kayaks, and kayakers must understand English to participate. (Price: 199 euros)

Also new is a camping experience that makes use of so-called Bivvy bags, custom-built, lightweight sleeping bags that allow for an overnight experience that doesn’t require tents.
