MSC Cruises today announced its plans to enter a brand new cruise segment, the ultra-luxury market, with a new 2 billion euros, four-ship order from Fincantieri.

The ships, the first of which will enter service in spring 2023, will sail with just 500 staterooms at 64,000 gross tons, giving guests more room and coming “as close as it comes to a private yacht experience,” according to MSC USA country manager Roberto Fusaro.

MSC sees the ships as an expansion of its ship-within-a-ship concept, MSC Yacht Club, which is offered on its other ships. Yacht Club includes 24-hour concierge service, as well as access to a private solarium, restaurant, and pool. All of those services will be available to all guests, 24/7 on the four new ships.

“It is off the back of the great success of our ship-within-a-ship luxury concept that our guests asked us to enter into the ultra-luxury segment, as a natural evolution of the MSC Yacht Club. These ships will be able to offer unique itineraries, thanks to their size, and the guest services will be taken to another level,” MSC executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said.

With the order, MSC now has a total of 17 new ships added, or scheduled to be added, during its 10-year, 13.6 billion euros expansion plan that kicked off with MSC Meraviglia in June 2017. Since Meraviglia’s addition, MSC has added Seaside and Seaview and is scheduled to add two more—Bellissima and Grandiosa—next year.
