On a recent journey through the Canadian Rockies, my itinerary came full circle, ending where the region’s tourism story first began.
As Canada’s first national park, Banff has welcomed travelers for more than a century. At its heart stands Fairmont Banff Springs, one of the country’s original grand railway hotels. Opened in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the five-story wooden hotel was initially designed to accommodate 280 guests. A decade later, the property was designated a National Historic Site of Canada.
Over the decades, the hotel evolved alongside Banff itself. Following several expansions and renovations, the present-day resort combines the original main building with an 11-story tower, creating the iconic silhouette that has earned it the nickname “The Castle in the Rockies.” Since joining the Fairmont brand in 2001, the resort has continued to blend its rich heritage with modern luxury while remaining one of Canada’s most recognizable hotels. In 2025, it received a Michelin Key from the Michelin Guide—among just 38 Canadian hotels to be awarded one.
Steeped in history and surrounded by the peaks of Banff National Park, Fairmont Banff Springs has welcomed royalty, celebrities, and generations of travelers. Its storied past has also inspired countless legends, adding another layer of intrigue to an already remarkable destination.
Here’s what luxury travel advisors should know before booking Fairmont Banff Springs.

- The location is unbeatable for those guests who prefer to be close to the action, with the village of Banff right at its feet.

Rooms & Suites
With 724 guest rooms and suites, Fairmont Banff Springs offers one of the most diverse accommodation portfolios in the Canadian Rockies. From cozy guest rooms to spacious specialty suites, Fairmont Gold accommodations and family-focused Gatehouse suites, the resort caters to virtually every type of traveler.
Even the entry-level Fairmont Rooms feel warm and inviting, featuring an elevated alpine aesthetic with rich wood finishes, comfortable bedding, elegant furnishings, and thoughtfully designed seating areas. One detail that stands out is the variety of the décor. Rather than following a standardized design throughout the hotel, guestrooms feature different color palettes and accents—including shades of green, gold, blue, and gray—giving each room its own character while maintaining the property’s historic charm.
Suites range from spacious one-bedroom accommodations to expansive two-bedroom layouts, each with its own distinct design. At the top end of the portfolio, the signature suites were originally created to host royalty and dignitaries and offer some of the most impressive views across the resort and surrounding mountains.
For guests seeking a more elevated experience, Fairmont Gold occupies the hotel’s fourth and fifth floors. Distinguished by a more contemporary design with rich red accents, these rooms include exclusive access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge, personalized service, and premium amenities, creating a boutique hotel experience within the larger resort.
Families should take particular note of the Gatehouse, the resort’s reimagined family accommodation concept. Located adjacent to the Adventure Center and Kids’ Club, these newly renovated two-bedroom suites were specifically designed for multigenerational travel. One of the bedrooms features custom-built double bunk beds, making the accommodations especially well-suited for families traveling with children.

Food & Drink
Dining is one of Fairmont Banff Springs’ greatest strengths. With seven restaurants and bars, plus a private dining dome available year-round, the resort offers enough variety that guests can comfortably spend several days on property without feeling limited.
Breakfast, often one of the most overlooked aspects of a hotel stay, is particularly impressive. Served in the elegant Vermillion Room, the expansive buffet features everything from fresh pastries and local specialties to made-to-order dishes, all complemented by an à la carte menu included in the experience. The dining room itself is bright, spacious, and refined, creating a relaxed atmosphere that elevates what could otherwise be a standard buffet. It also serves what was, without question, the best cappuccino I enjoyed during my time in the Canadian Rockies. In the evening, the restaurant transforms into a French-inspired brasserie with a menu highlighting classic techniques and Canadian ingredients.
For lunch, Rundle Bar is an excellent choice, particularly on its scenic outdoor terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains. The menu balances lighter fare (including fresh salad) with seafood, sandwiches, and hearty entrées, making it equally suitable for a leisurely lunch or an afternoon break between activities.
Steak lovers will naturally gravitate toward 1888 Chop House, the resort’s signature restaurant. The menu showcases premium Alberta beef, sustainably sourced wild game, and seafood in an upscale modern steakhouse setting. For guests looking for something different, Castello Ristorante serves handcrafted pastas and classic Italian cuisine, while Grapes offers casual pizzas and shareable comfort food. Stock Food & Drink is the resort’s convenient grab-and-go café, complete with indoor seating for guests seeking a quick meal without sacrificing quality. Meanwhile, Waldhaus, tucked into its own chalet overlooking the Bow and Spray rivers, delivers a cozy Bavarian-inspired dining experience that feels worlds away from the main hotel.
Perhaps most impressive is the consistency across the resort’s culinary program. Every meal I experienced—from the generous breakfast buffet to elegant dinners and casual lunches—was thoughtfully prepared and genuinely memorable. At large destination resorts, dining can sometimes become an afterthought once guests are on the property. Fairmont Banff Springs is a refreshing exception, demonstrating that its culinary program receives the same level of attention as the rest of the guest experience.

Wellness & Fitness
Fairmont Banff Springs offers one of the most comprehensive wellness programs in the Canadian Rockies, with facilities designed to appeal to both active travelers and those seeking relaxation.
Included in every stay, a visit to the resort’s aquatic center is particularly impressive. Both the indoor and outdoor saltwater pools are heated and remain open year-round, allowing guests to enjoy a swim regardless of the season. Surrounded by mountain views, the outdoor pool is especially inviting after a day spent hiking, skiing, or exploring Banff National Park. The wellness facilities also include a whirlpool, dry sauna, and a poolside health bar, making it easy to enjoy a light meal or a refreshing drink without leaving the area.
The fitness center is equally well equipped, featuring an extensive selection of cardio equipment, free weights, and functional training space. Personal training sessions are available on weekdays, while complimentary fitness and yoga classes are offered daily for hotel guests.
The centerpiece of the wellness program, however, is the resort’s 40,000-square-foot spa. Among the largest luxury spas in the region, it features a complete hydrotherapy circuit, three waterfall plunge pools, an indoor mineral pool, an outdoor heated pool reserved exclusively for spa guests, steam and dry saunas, and 27 treatment rooms. The treatment menu ranges from massages and body therapies to facials, salon services, and nail care.
One of the spa’s highlights is its beautifully designed relaxation lounge. Overlooking the surrounding mountains, the space features a fireplace, cozy blankets, and a selection of complimentary teas, coffee, fresh fruit, and snacks, encouraging guests to linger before or after their treatments.
For travelers seeking a true resort experience, the spa is more than an added amenity—it’s a destination in its own right and one of the property’s standout experiences.

Amenities & Features
There is no shortage of things to do at Fairmont Banff Springs. While its location provides immediate access to Banff National Park, the resort itself offers enough activities to keep guests entertained throughout their stay.
The convenient Adventure Center, located within the resort, can arrange virtually every mountain experience imaginable. During the warmer months, guests can enjoy hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, mountain biking, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting. Winter brings an entirely different set of adventures, including skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, dog sledding, and sleigh rides.
Golfers will appreciate the resort’s signature Stanley Thompson-designed championship golf course, one of Canada’s most celebrated mountain courses, and conveniently located on the property.
Within the resort, complimentary and paid activities are offered daily, from guided historical tours that showcase the hotel’s fascinating past to wilderness walks and wellness programming. The Adventure Center also assists with equipment rentals, including bicycles and e-bikes, making it easy to explore the surrounding area.
One of the resort’s greatest advantages, however, is its location. Within walking distance of the charming town of Banff, guests can easily browse local boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. Several scenic hiking trails also begin directly from the property, including the short walk to Bow Falls, one of Banff’s most iconic natural landmarks.

Location & Access
Fairmont Banff Springs is located approximately one hour from Calgary International Airport. Guests can reach the resort by rental car or private transfer. For those preferring shared transportation, the hotel partners with Pursuit to operate a scheduled shuttle service between Calgary International Airport and the resort. Advance reservations are recommended.
The village of Banff is within walking distance, making it easy to stroll and visit its numerous shops and restaurants. The location is very convenient: it is not in a remote area, yet it still feels secluded.
