The Long Game
Luxury travel is having its best run in a generation. Demand is strong, clients are loyal, and the independent advisor has never been more central to how the finest trips get planned.
Luxury travel is having its best run in a generation. Demand is strong, clients are loyal, and the independent advisor has never been more central to how the finest trips get planned. It is a very good time to build a travel business. And building is exactly what the most ambitious advisors I know are trying to do.
Look across the field, though, you see advisors at very different stages of the same journey. Some are in the first years of building a book. Some are established and hungry to scale. Some run thriving practices that have outgrown what one person can serve. And some, after long and successful careers, are starting to think about what comes next.
For all our sophistication, our industry has never had a good way to connect those stages, so that the energy of one advisor meets the opportunity of another. That gap is worth closing though, and closing it benefits everyone in the industry. That’s why Global Travel Collection launched The Exchange, a confidential platform that matches advisors looking to grow through acquisition or partnership with those ready for a transition.
My career has been spent in distribution and trade relations, from commercial roles at British Airways to running Bonotel, a wholesaler for upscale and luxury hotels. The lessons from both are the same. A great product, or a great relationship, is worth more moving through the right hands than sitting still. Value is created in the passing on, and everyone in that chain can win: the advisor who grows, the advisor who transitions, and above all the client who never feels the seam.
The bigger challenge is what happens when none of this is planned. A generation of relationships and hard-won expertise is at risk of simply dispersing, with no structure to carry it forward, and the trust clients placed in their advisor scatters with it.
For an advisor with ambition, that is opportunity hiding in plain sight. Expanding by acquisition, or partnering with a capable and eager agency, is one of the fastest ways to add capacity, expertise and clientele, as long as the handover is done well. And that part matters, because a book of relationships is only worth what survives the transfer. A strong transition team and a deliberate, gradual handover are the difference between inheriting real relationships and inheriting a list. Done right, the acquiring advisor gains years of trust they could never have built from scratch, and the agency that partners with them gains momentum that would have taken years to earn alone.
The common thread is timing. Whether you are acquiring, partnering or eventually handing over, the best outcomes come from acting deliberately while the business is thriving, not waiting until circumstance forces the decision.
That is what legacy really means in this business. Not the size of the agency you built, but whether the care you put into your clients outlasts your day-to-day role in it. The advisors who manage that, by growing thoughtfully or transitioning well, leave the whole industry stronger than they found it. The craft was always in knowing your client. But the real art is in knowing how to grow, and how to build something that lasts.
