When you visit dozens of hotels every year, it is easy to become a little blasé. I can appreciate a property for its comfort, amenities, or location, but it is increasingly rare for a hotel to genuinely blow me away.

What I look for always depends on the trip: sometimes, location is the priority. Other times, I want a brand I know I can trust, a resort with plenty to do or, to the contrary, somewhere that encourages me to do absolutely nothing. Hotels are an important part of the journey—but it takes something special to be memorable.

When I walked into Cotton House, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, set in Barcelona’s famous 19th-century district of Eixample, my immediate reaction was simply: “Wow.” And that doesn’t happen very often.

Cotton House takes its name from the building’s history as the former headquarters of Barcelona’s cotton manufacturers’ guild. Reminders of that heritage are woven throughout the property—sometimes in the smallest details—and the result is both sophisticated and remarkably well executed. The property has it all: a unique setting, an excellent location, a stylish rooftop, a chic courtyard, comfortable rooms, personalized service, and an elegant on-site restaurant.

The architectural details alone are impressive, and I’m fairly certain I didn’t manage to notice them all during my stay. From the elegant lobby and dramatic spiral staircase to the playful suspended lighting and Egyptian cotton bedding in every room, Cotton House is a great example of how a historic building can be transformed into a hotel without losing the character that made it special in the first place.

Rather than feeling like a museum, the hotel is warm, intimate, and comfortable. It is the kind of property you will enjoy exploring corner by corner, where the history is always present but never gets in the way of the experience.

Here’s what luxury travel advisors should know before booking Cotton House Hotel:

The Courtyard at Cotton House.

Why Travel Advisors Book It

  • The rooftop pool is a relatively rare amenity for an urban boutique hotel and a particularly welcome addition during Barcelona’s hot summer months.
  • Set within a historic building, the intimate property feels distinctive and full of character, with thoughtful design details throughout.
  • The location is ideal for exploring Barcelona on foot, within walking distance of Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló, and many of the city’s major attractions, with the Tetuan metro station nearby.
  • Some room categories feature balconies overlooking the charming courtyard and neighboring residential buildings, adding an authentic Barcelona feel to the stay.

Rooms & Suites

Cotton House features 78 rooms and five spacious suites. In keeping with the hotel’s cotton heritage, the hotel uses natural materials, soft textures, and neutral tones throughout. Rooms feature 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, 600-gram Egyptian cotton terry towels and bath sheets, and natural toiletries from Italian brand Ortigia.

Room categories range from Cotton Rooms to Egyptian Rooms and Taffeta Suites. I stayed in an Egyptian Room, a corner room with a little more space and a private balcony. Rooms overlooking the courtyard also feature small but charming balconies facing the surrounding residential buildings, giving the experience a particularly authentic Barcelonan feel, with the hotel’s lush courtyard below.

The white studded-leather headboard, cotton-inspired artwork, extra-comfortable bedding, and bright bathroom, complete with a cotton branch as a subtle decorative touch, all tie beautifully into the hotel’s story. Plush bathrobes, slippers, bathtubs, and an almost entirely white color palette added to the sense of tranquility.

Rooms are on the smaller side, which isn’t unusual in a European city hotel, but I never found mine uncomfortable. In fact, the thoughtful design and soothing color palette made it particularly inviting, exactly the kind of environment I wanted to return to after a full day exploring busy Barcelona.

Every room offers 24-hour room service, turndown service, a mini-bar filled with local delicacies, and a coffee station with a Nespresso machine and a selection of Ortigia products for guests to use during their stay.

For more space, each of the five suites is themed and offers a different feel and experience, with a unique wallpaper and color palette to choose from. Every suite offers at least a separate living area, and the Vichy suite offers two full floors, one bedroom, two sofa beds, and a complete residential feel.

Food & Drink

When you stay at a city hotel, the local food scene is usually part of the main attraction. I’m rarely tempted to spend an evening at my hotel’s restaurant when I’m in a city as busy as Barcelona. Surprisingly, though, Cotton House’s food and beverage offering made me want to stay in.

It certainly helps that Batuar Restaurant is gorgeous. The restaurant is divided into three distinct spaces—the bar, dining room, and courtyard, all equally inviting. A private room at the back can accommodate up to 12 guests for a more intimate dinner. That being said, the courtyard was, without a doubt, the highlight. Extremely charming and atmospheric, it naturally draws guests throughout the day, whether for a drink, a quick bite, or a full dinner.

The menu also feels refreshing in a city where tapas are king. If you find yourself craving something a little simpler after several days of exploring Barcelona’s dining scene, Batuar is a welcome alternative. I appreciated everything I ate there: fish of the day, beef sirloin, tomato salad, and lemon curd.

Batuar also serves breakfast each morning, with both buffet and à la carte options. When the weather cooperates, having your morning coffee outside in the courtyard, surrounded by greenery yet right in the middle of Barcelona, is particularly pleasant. There is something genuinely special about starting the day there.

Amenities & Features

Cotton House may not have an extensive list of amenities, but for a boutique city hotel of its size, it has everything you need—and what it does offer is extremely well done. The highlight is definitely its charming rooftop pool and relaxation area. After a day exploring the city, it is oh so pleasant to come back, settle into one of the plush loungers, and take a dip in the pool while overlooking Barcelona.

The rooftop also offers bar service throughout the day, making it equally appealing for those who simply want to head upstairs at sunset and enjoy the views with a drink in hand.

The hotel also has a 24-hour fitness center and a library. The latter is a particularly nice touch. Cotton House is filled with architectural details, so you’ll likely find yourself wandering through its different spaces at some point during your stay. The library is one of those places worth discovering, whether to browse the books, sit for a while, or simply admire your surroundings.

Location & Access

Cotton House is located approximately 10 miles from Barcelona International Airport. The hotel can pre-arrange a private transfer upon request, while taxis and Ubers are also easy to find.

The property is just a few minutes from the nearest subway station and within walking distance of many of Barcelona’s major attractions and sites, making it particularly convenient for travelers who want to explore the city on foot.

A car is absolutely not necessary during a stay here. For guests who do rent one, however, the hotel offers valet service through a nearby private parking facility for approximately 40 euros per day.

How to Book Smart

The property is a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program. Travel advisors receive a 10% commission on the BAR rate. The property is available for booking through all major GDS platforms.
