Hotel Palacio de Los Ángeles opened on March 1 in Haro, Spain, bringing a five-star boutique hotel to the center of La Rioja, the country’s best-known wine region. The property is located in a restored 18th-century Baroque palace and is Majestic Hotel Management’s first project in Rioja.
Located in the historic town often referred to as the wine capital of La Rioja, the hotel sits within Rioja Alta, an area known for its concentration of traditional bodegas and longstanding winemaking estates. Haro is roughly a 90-minute drive from Bilbao Airport, making it one of the most accessible bases for exploring the region’s vineyards and wineries.
The project centers on the restoration of the former noble residence, which preserves original stonework and historic architectural volumes while introducing contemporary interiors designed by Barcelona-based Trenchs Studio. The design approach leans on natural materials, soft neutral tones, and carefully layered lighting to balance the building’s historic structure with a more restrained, modern aesthetic.
The hotel features 38 guest rooms and suites. An additional 10 one- and two-bedroom residences in an adjacent building provide apartment-style accommodations with full access to hotel services.
A defining element of the property is its wine program, anchored by El Calado, a historic underground cellar located beneath the palace. The cellar houses what the hotel describes as the world’s largest collection of Rioja wines. Above ground, tastings extend onto a dedicated wine terrace designed for open-air experiences.
Food and beverage programming is overseen by Carlos and Ignacio Echapresto, the two-Michelin-starred brothers behind Venta Moncalvillo in nearby Daroca de Rioja. Their culinary direction shapes the hotel’s La Ventilla restaurant and wine bar, which draws heavily on regional ingredients and seasonal products.
Wellness facilities include a spa offering treatments by Natura Bissé, a fully equipped gym, and a landscaped garden terrace with a heated outdoor pool located within the palace grounds.

Sustainability was incorporated into the building’s reconstruction, which received VERDE (GREEN) certification from the Green Building Council of Spain, recognizing the project’s environmental standards and operational practices.
Hotel Palacio de Los Ángeles has also joined Leading Hotels of the World, placing the property within the organization’s global collection of independent luxury hotels.
“We are pleased to welcome Palacio de Los Ángeles to the Leading Hotels of the World,” said Dean Bannon, the vice-president of member success and development for LHW. “As a sister property to the esteemed Majestic Hotel & Spa in Barcelona, it brings a longstanding commitment to independent excellence into a destination that is entirely new for our collection. Haro, at the heart of La Rioja, offers a rich cultural and viticultural heritage, and the team behind Palacio de Los Ángeles has embraced this setting with admirable vision. Their thoughtful revitalization of a historic palace, and ambition to create experiences that capture the spirit of the region speak directly to the values we champion.”
The opening positions Hotel Palacio de Los Ángeles as a new hospitality anchor in Haro, as Rioja continues to attract international visitors drawn to the region’s wineries, gastronomy, and cultural heritage.
