United Airlines has expanded its economy meal preorder program to shorter flights across North America and the Caribbean, allowing more travelers to choose fresh food before boarding. The change, announced yesterday, lowers the minimum flight distance from more than 1,190 miles to more than 900 miles.
According to United, the expansion covers 420 additional flights and gives up to 65,000 more customers per day access to the service. Newly eligible routes include flights between Chicago and Houston, Denver and San Francisco, and Houston and Washington, D.C.
The program lets economy passengers select fresh Bistro on Board meals and other eligible retail items through United’s website or mobile app. The preorder window opens five days before departure and closes 24 hours before takeoff, making it a useful detail for advisors to include in clients’ predeparture reminders.
“We want our customers to have more of what they value when they fly—more choice, more convenience, and a better experience onboard,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer.
The fresh menu rotates monthly and includes sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and breakfast dishes. Current selections include a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt by Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle. United’s signature snackboxes and snacks are also available.
Travelers can view their flight’s selections in the “Trips” section of United’s website, while app users will receive a notification when preordering opens. These are retail food offerings; the expansion does not introduce complimentary fresh meals in Economy. United also notes that preordered meals may be unavailable under certain circumstances.
The airline is updating other parts of its food program, with refreshed contents for its Tapas, Takeoff, and Recline snackboxes arriving November 1. Seasonal offerings include a limited-edition Wishes snackbox developed with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The meal expansion accompanies broader onboard investments. United says Starlink Wi-Fi is now available across its entire two-cabin regional fleet and on more than 280 mainline aircraft, with fleetwide installations expected to finish in 2027. MileagePlus members receive complimentary access on equipped aircraft.
Entertainment upgrades include adding TBS to live programming on Starlink-enabled seatback screens and continuing to install seatback entertainment systems. United expects up to 1,000 aircraft to have seatback screens before the end of 2027.
