Capella Kyoto opened on March 22, the brand’s first property in Japan. The 89-key hotel is located in Miyagawa-cho, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, directly opposite Kenninji Temple and a short walk from the Kamo River.
The four-story property is part of a broader redevelopment along Shinmichi Street, built on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School, along with the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre (which continues to function as a training and performance venue for geiko and maiko) and a new community center. Guests have access to performances within the space, a point of differentiation in a district where many cultural experiences are private.

Architecture is led by Kengo Kuma & Associates, with interiors by Brewin Design Office. The design references Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouse, taking its spatial sequencing—narrow passageways, layered thresholds, and internal gardens—into a contemporary hotel format.
Room types range from entry-level rooms to a 2,200-square-foot Capella Suite overlooking the Higashiyama skyline. Six onsen suites include private hot spring baths, and select categories, including Premier Theatre Rooms and Gion Suites, are positioned to face either the Kaburenjo Theatre or Kenninji Temple.

The culinary program is anchored by SoNoMa by SingleThread, the Sonoma-based three-Michelin-starred concept’s first international collaboration. The restaurant features a 12-seat counter and a 20-seat lounge, with menus that draw on both Kyoto’s Kansai region and California’s Dry Creek Valley. Additional outlets include Yoi, a kappo-style restaurant focused on late-night dining, and Lanterne, a French brasserie serving as the hotel’s all-day venue.

Wellness is centered on the Auriga Spa, which features private onsen rooms, treatment spaces, and a sauna. Programming incorporates both Japanese practices and the brand’s existing wellness framework.
“Kyoto is one of the world’s greatest cradles of craft, ritual, and tradition, and Capella Kyoto has been conceived to honour that legacy in full,” said Clive Edwards, Capella’s senior vice president of operations.
Rates start from $2,400 for two, with bookings now open.
