Less than a year after opening its doors, JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo has named longtime Marriott International executive Jakob Helgen as its new general manager.
Helgen officially assumed the role on June 28, bringing more than 22 years of experience with Marriott International across Asia Pacific. His appointment comes at a formative moment for the hotel, which debuted in October 2025 as the brand’s flagship property in Japan and remains one of Marriott’s most closely watched luxury openings in the region.
“Being a passionate and avid JW Marriott brand advocate, I very much look forward to supporting the JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo team on their continuous journey of curating refined luxury experiences and in the further establishment of this stunning new tranquil urban retreat in the heart of Tokyo,” Helgen said.
A native of Sweden, Helgen most recently served as Marriott International’s area vice president for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar, overseeing regional operations from 2019 to 2024. During that period, Marriott expanded its portfolio across those markets from 50 to 80 hotels, including doubling its presence in Vietnam from 10 to 20 properties. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles overseeing South China, Hong Kong, Macau, Hainan, and Taiwan, helping support Marriott’s expansion into both the Macau and Taiwan markets.
Helgen’s earlier operational roles included positions at JW Marriott Mumbai and JW Marriott Seoul before he moved into regional operations. He joined Marriott in 2002 as director of food and beverage at the Renaissance Riverside Hotel Saigon after beginning his hospitality career at Relais & Châteaux properties and Michelin-starred restaurants across Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, and France.
