Marriott International has debuted the JW Marriott brand in Tokyo, opening the 200-room JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo in the heart of Takanawa Gateway City, the capital’s newest mixed-use development. The opening marks the brand’s second property in Japan and its latest move to strengthen its luxury footprint across Asia.

Anchoring a development billed as Tokyo’s “City of the Future,” the hotel sits above the new Takanawa Gateway Station, minutes from Haneda Airport and walking distance to Shinagawa Station, the future terminus of the high-speed Chuo Shinkansen linking Tokyo with Nagoya and Osaka.

Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, the property presents what the firm calls a “timeless sanctuary” high above the city. Interiors balance muted natural tones with Japanese craftsmanship—from Kamakura-bori–inspired artworks and Sho Makishima photography to a glass “Tree House” installation by Czech studio Lasvit that anchors the lobby. Rooms and suites feature garden-inspired palettes and floor-to-ceiling views of Tokyo, emphasizing calm over spectacle.

The debut also introduces JW Marriott’s new “Mindful Rooms and Suites” concept to Asia, launching in December 2025. The initiative, first tested in select U.S. properties, brings tailored design, lighting, and amenities to foster rest and reflection, a response to rising demand for wellness-driven luxury stays.

Culinary Director Conrado Tromp, who has led kitchens across three continents, will oversee a trio of flagship venues: Kakō, a contemporary washoku restaurant sourcing sake from all 46 prefectures; Saki, an eight-seat kappo concept created with two-Michelin-starred chefs Kazumine Nishida and Emmanuel Stroobant; and Sefino, a Mediterranean restaurant developed with Andō’s Agustin Balbi. A croissant bar, the JW Bar, and a high-floor executive lounge round out the offerings.

Wellness facilities include a 28th-floor spa, fitness center, and quarry-backdropped pool with panoramic skyline views. Event facilities span more than 11,000 square feet, headlined by a ballroom equipped with Japan’s largest movable LED wall system.

General manager Christopher Clark called the opening “a haven of sophistication and tranquility, where every detail inspires moments of connection, reflection, and well-being.”
