Rosewood Mayakoba Review: A Smart Pick for Couples, Families, and Wellness-Focused Travelers
Advisors love Rosewood Mayakoba for its oversized suite inventory, exceptional culinary programming, and rare ability to appeal equally to honeymooners, families, and multi-generational travelers. Here’s how to book it best.

In a region crowded with luxury resorts competing for the same affluent traveler, I found Rosewood Mayakoba to be one of Riviera Maya’s most complete resort experiences.
Set within the 620-acre Mayakoba enclave, the 129-suite resort unfolds across a network of winding lagoons, mangroves, jungle, and beachfront, creating a destination that feels more like a private island retreat than a traditional beach resort.
For me, the experience began before I even reached my suite. After arriving at the airy open-air lobby, I boarded one of the resort’s electric boats and glided through the property’s waterways, passing mangroves, private docks, and dense greenery. The journey was remarkably peaceful and immediately established the tone for the stay. While Rosewood Mayakoba is undoubtedly grand in scale, it never feels overbuilt or disconnected from its surroundings. Instead, the resort feels remarkably organic, with architecture and landscaping that embrace the natural environment rather than compete with it.

The setting is undeniably beautiful, but what ultimately distinguished Rosewood Mayakoba was its balance. Many luxury resorts excel at serving either couples or families. Rosewood manages to do both. Families have access to extensive programming, multiple pools, and spacious suite accommodations, while couples can retreat to adults-only spaces such as Aquí Me Quedo, the hidden speakeasy La Isla Secreta, or the spa’s private island sanctuary. Even during busy periods, the sprawling layout prevents the resort from ever feeling crowded. Although there were plenty of families on the property during my stay, I never felt that children intruded on the overall experience—a surprisingly difficult balance for resorts to achieve.
Accommodations emphasize privacy and indoor-outdoor living, with every suite featuring a plunge pool, outdoor terrace, and dedicated butler service. Sustainability is woven throughout the guest experience, from electric boats and golf carts to ongoing conservation efforts that protect the surrounding mangrove ecosystem.
Rather than offering generic resort dining, Rosewood Mayakoba uses food as a vehicle for exploring Mexico’s regional identities. From Baja-inspired seafood at Agave Azul to Yucatán-focused cocktails at Zapote Bar, the restaurants celebrate the country’s extraordinary culinary diversity. The standout experience for me was La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen, an open-fire communal dinner beneath a sacred ceiba tree that felt less like a restaurant and more like a gathering of guests, staff, and friends.
For travelers seeking wellness, Sense, A Rosewood Spa provides one of the strongest spa programs in Mexico, incorporating Mayan traditions, temazcal ceremonies, and holistic treatments into a serene island setting.

Rooms & Suites
Rosewood Mayakoba’s 129 accommodations are among the most spacious in Riviera Maya, ranging from lagoon-facing suites to expansive beachfront residences designed for extended-family stays.
The Lagoon Studio Suite is one of the smartest bookings on the property. Set along the resort’s waterways, it delivers the quintessential Rosewood experience without a significant rate increase. During my stay, the private plunge pool became part of the daily routine, while the oversized bathroom stood out as one of the suite’s strongest features. A deep soaking tub is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass and lush greenery, creating the feeling of bathing outdoors, while the separate outdoor shower offers another memorable connection to the surrounding landscape. The overall layout feels exceptionally spacious and thoughtfully designed, with indoor and outdoor living spaces flowing naturally together.
For families and multi-generational groups, larger suites and private residences offer multiple bedrooms and generous common areas. Many accommodations can be combined for larger parties, while beachfront categories provide direct access to the sand.
Across all room categories, guests receive butler service, daily fruit and water replenishment, luxury bath amenities, and private outdoor space. Advisors should note that lagoon-facing accommodations often provide exceptional privacy and value compared to entry-level beachfront inventory.

Food & Drink
The resort’s culinary program explores Mexico’s diverse regional cuisines rather than relying on international luxury-hotel standards. Breakfast at Casa del Lago is a highlight, featuring traditional Mexican specialties alongside an extensive buffet. Punta Bonita showcases seafood and flavors inspired by Mexico’s Pacific Coast, while Agave Azul draws from Baja California’s longstanding Asian culinary influences.
The must-book experience is La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen. Held beneath a towering ceiba tree, this communal dinner combines open-fire cooking, ingredients harvested from the property’s gardens, live music, and shared tables that encourage conversation among guests and associates alike. What makes the evening especially memorable is that staff members dine alongside guests, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a gathering than traditional restaurant service. During my dinner, I was struck by how many fellow diners were repeat visitors, an unusually strong testament to the loyalty Rosewood Mayakoba inspires. It is the rare resort experience that guests return to year after year, and La Ceiba offers a glimpse into why.
Cocktail enthusiasts should reserve an evening at Zapote Bar, which has earned international recognition for its inventive use of Yucatán ingredients and heritage Mexican spirits. Advisors should also arrange access to La Isla Secreta, a hidden reservation-only speakeasy accessible only by boat through the mangroves. As our boat approached the island one evening, my husband pointed toward a softly lit structure emerging from the mangroves and said, “What’s that? I want to go there.” It turned out to be La Isla Secreta. That sense of curiosity and discovery is part of the appeal. Before guests even arrive, the hidden lounge already feels intriguing.

Experiences & Amenities
Guests have access to six pools, a mile-long beach, water sports, tennis, golf at El Camaleón, nature tours, and the wider Mayakoba resort complex. Daily eco-tours provide insight into the region’s wildlife and conservation efforts, while bicycles and electric boats encourage exploration of the property’s extensive network of lagoons and trails.
The concierge team can arrange everything from private yacht charters and cenote excursions to cultural experiences throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Many activities can be customized according to guest interests, making the resort particularly attractive for longer stays.
One of the property’s greatest strengths is that guests can be as active or as relaxed as they choose. It is entirely possible to spend a week moving between the beach, pools, spa, and restaurants without ever feeling bored—or ever needing to leave the Mayakoba enclave. (We didn’t.)

Wellness & The Spa
Located on its own private island, Sense, A Rosewood Spa is a 17,000-square-foot wellness sanctuary incorporating jungle surroundings, hydrotherapy facilities, treatment rooms, meditation spaces, and dedicated wellness suites. The spa draws heavily from Mayan healing traditions and indigenous ingredients, creating experiences that feel rooted in the destination rather than imported from elsewhere.
The signature temazcal ceremony is among the most meaningful wellness offerings on the property. Led by a resident shaman, the experience combines heat, aromatherapy, chanting, and guided introspection inside a traditional sweat lodge inspired by pre-Hispanic practices.
The temazcal was among the most powerful experiences of my stay—equal parts emotional, spiritual, and physically challenging. Travelers interested in personal growth, introspection, and traditional healing practices will find it deeply rewarding, but those seeking a more conventional spa day may prefer the property’s hydrotherapy facilities and treatment offerings.
Advisors can also arrange wellness-focused itineraries incorporating sound healing, meditation, hydrotherapy, and personalized treatments. The spa’s extensive facilities make it a compelling draw for clients prioritizing restoration and personal transformation.

Family & Multi-Gen Appeal
Few luxury resorts balance family travel and adult-oriented luxury as effectively as Rosewood Mayakoba.
Spacious suites and residences accommodate larger groups without sacrificing privacy, while the Rosewood Explorers program provides engaging activities for younger guests. Seasonal programming ranges from eco-tours and wildlife experiences to pottery workshops, movie nights, and cooking classes.
Families can enjoy the resort’s extensive outdoor space and multiple pool areas. At the same time, adults-only spaces ensure couples can still enjoy a peaceful experience. This flexibility makes the property particularly well-suited to multi-generational celebrations where travelers have varying interests and activity levels.
Sustainability & Accessibility
Rosewood Mayakoba was built with the preservation of the area’s mangrove ecosystem in mind and holds Rainforest Alliance certification. Electric boats transport guests through the lagoons, while bicycles and electric golf carts reduce the property’s environmental footprint. Responsible sourcing, conservation initiatives, and environmental education programs further support the resort’s sustainability goals.
The expansive layout means some guests may rely on golf carts to travel between venues, though the resort’s transportation network is efficient and well coordinated. Advisors booking for guests with mobility considerations should discuss specific room placement and transportation needs in advance.
Location & Access
Rosewood Mayakoba occupies a prime position within Riviera Maya, approximately 35 minutes south of Cancún International Airport and 15 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. The resort arranges private airport transfers in Cadillac Escalades, creating a seamless arrival experience from touchdown to suite.
The setting provides a sense of seclusion without feeling remote. Guests can easily access shopping, dining, and nightlife in Playa del Carmen while remaining insulated within the private Mayakoba enclave. Once on the property, guests rarely need to leave thanks to the breadth of dining, wellness, recreation, and cultural programming available within Mayakoba itself.
How to Book Smart
Rosewood Mayakoba is a strong Virtuoso booking, with preferred-partner amenities that typically include daily breakfast, resort credits, potential upgrades, and flexible check-in and checkout benefits, subject to availability.
For most clients, the Lagoon Studio Suite offers the strongest combination of value, privacy, and signature Rosewood features. Advisors should also prioritize securing reservations for La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen, the temazcal ceremony, and La Isla Secreta well in advance, particularly during peak travel periods.
High season runs from December through April, when suites and specialty experiences frequently sell out. Travelers planning holiday stays should book several months in advance. Upgrade opportunities are generally strongest outside peak holiday periods, particularly during shoulder seasons when occupancy levels are slightly lower.
Service throughout the resort is polished and highly personalized. While I experienced one minor housekeeping timing issue during my stay, it was the exception rather than the rule in an otherwise exceptionally attentive operation.
Like much of the Riviera Maya, Rosewood Mayakoba contends with seasonal sargassum. During my visit, the resort’s team worked diligently to manage beach conditions, and the breadth of experiences—from the lagoons and pools to the spa and restaurants—meant that beach conditions never defined the overall stay.
