The TSA is preparing for one of the busiest travel periods of the year, forecasting that it will screen nearly 18.7 million passengers at airport security checkpoints between June 30 and July 6 as Americans travel for Fourth of July celebrations and the country’s 250th anniversary.
The busiest day is expected to be Thursday, July 2, when more than 3 million travelers are projected to pass through TSA checkpoints nationwide. According to the agency, staffing levels are in place to handle the surge, with additional technology and operational enhancements designed to keep security lines moving during what is expected to be a particularly busy week.
“We’re thrilled so many passengers are planning travel to enjoy America’s milestone 250th birthday and celebrate the greatest nation on earth,” said TSA senior official performing the duties of the administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill. “TSA security checkpoints are fully staffed and prepared to welcome these travelers and handle the large passenger volumes expected during the Fourth of July holiday period.”
This year’s holiday travel also overlaps with the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, prompting TSA to expand security operations at airports serving the tournament’s 11 U.S. host cities. The agency has deployed additional screening officers, canine teams, and National Deployment Officers at 14 core host-city airports, while the Federal Air Marshal Service and other specialized units continue to support security at stadiums, Fan Fests, and transportation hubs. TSA said it has also introduced new screening technologies at key airports to improve efficiency while maintaining security.
Beyond its World Cup operations, the agency announced several initiatives aimed at military travelers and veterans. The Veterans Expedited TSA Screening (VETS) Safe Travel Act now provides eligible severely injured and disabled veterans with complimentary TSA PreCheck enrollment through the Department of Veterans Affairs. TSA is also expanding front-of-the-line access for active-duty service members to 33 airports located near major military installations, while military families continue to receive complimentary or discounted TSA PreCheck benefits.
For advisors with clients traveling over the holiday week, the message remains familiar: arrive at the airport early, confirm airline schedules before departure, and allow extra time during peak travel periods. Travelers headed to World Cup matches should also expect heightened security measures at airports serving host cities, even as TSA says it has increased staffing and resources to accommodate the seasonal rush.
