Lindblad Expeditions Holdings has acquired a 60% stake in luxury Antarctic operator White Desert and aviation travel brand Echo Charlie, expanding its collection of high-end adventures across air, land, and sea.

The deal represents the largest transaction in Lindblad’s history. The company paid approximately $61 million in cash for the majority stake, plus roughly $6 million for cash on the balance sheet, subject to customary adjustments. White Desert and Echo Charlie will continue to operate as stand-alone brands.

“While this is the largest transaction in the history of the company, it is much more than a business deal—it is a powerful partnership between two businesses that have spent decades pushing the boundaries of what experiential travel can be,” said Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions Holdings.

Polar explorer Patrick Woodhead founded White Desert in 2005 to bring travelers into Antarctica’s remote interior. Its itineraries include journeys to the Geographic South Pole and visits to an Emperor penguin colony with more than 20,000 birds. Lindblad said the companies will explore opportunities to expand White Desert through new camps, guest experiences and logistical capabilities.

Echo Charlie, meanwhile, offers small-group journeys aboard a restored vintage DC-3 that accommodates 12 passengers. Designed to reach remote airstrips without relying on commercial airports, the aircraft will carry guests on itineraries spanning destinations such as Colombia, Patagonia, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

“Taking our aviation expertise beyond Antarctica, Echo Charlie’s collection of itineraries explores the far reaches of the globe,” Woodhead said. “This is genuine adventure, made safe and accessible—the only question is where we go next.”

Woodhead will remain chairman of White Desert and serve as CEO of Echo Charlie. He will also join Lindblad Expeditions as a strategic innovation advisor, contributing to the company’s future product development and guest experiences.

“Having spent the last 20 years pioneering tourism in the interior, we are privileged to join forces with people who did exactly the same thing, only 40 years earlier on the coastline of Antarctica,” Woodhead said. “With a shared ethos for small-scale, responsible travel, we are thrilled for what lies ahead.”

The additions bring Lindblad’s portfolio to eight brands, including National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, Natural Habitat Adventures, DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co., and Classic Journeys.
