A&K Sanctuary to Open Luxury Airstream Camp on Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats
The five-suite Samkani Camp will welcome guests directly on the world’s largest salt flat in late 2027.

A&K Sanctuary will open a luxury camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027, offering travelers a rare opportunity to spend the night directly on the vast salt flat.
Samkani Camp will consist of five architect-designed Airstream suites, along with a sixth Airstream housing the property’s dining and lounge areas. Located roughly 12,000 feet above sea level, the Salar de Uyuni stretches across approximately 12,000 square kilometers and is considered the world’s largest salt flat.
The camp’s name comes from Aymara, an Indigenous language spoken across Bolivia’s Altiplano. “Samkani” translates to “the one who dreams,” a reference to the area’s expansive nighttime views. With the camp typically located more than 15 miles from other people, guests will have an unobstructed panorama of the stars reaching to the horizon.
Each suite will operate as a self-contained unit designed for the salar’s remote and exposed conditions. The Airstreams’ metallic exteriors will reflect the surrounding salt and sky, while interiors will incorporate blue Bolivian marble and chrome details. The communal Airstream at the center of the camp will include a bar, plus space for dining and relaxing.
The property draws on A&K’s experience operating low-impact mobile camps in Africa, adapted for the high-altitude Bolivian plateau. Depending on the season, guests may see the salar as a seemingly endless expanse of cracked, hexagonal salt tiles or covered by a thin layer of water that creates its celebrated mirror effect.
Every stay will include a private guide and driver, with more than 30 available experiences across the salt flat. Excursions will include visits to remote islands and volcanic caves, as well as nighttime stargazing. A&K says several activities will be available exclusively to Samkani guests and will be led by its Bolivia-based team.
Samkani Camp will be bookable as part of an A&K Tailormade itinerary or a Small Group Journey through Bolivia. The company has not yet announced an on-sale date.
