As the Algarve breaks tourism records and climbs the ranks of Europe’s luxury destinations, Mondrian is staking its claim. The brand has announced that its first Portuguese outpost, Mondrian Arcaya, will open in 2028 within Vilamoura’s highly anticipated Arcaya development.
The 120-room property will feature 30 luxury suites, along with a rooftop restaurant offering ocean views, a poolside bar, and an all-day lobby lounge. State-of-the-art wellness spaces and three serene pools cater to design-conscious leisure travelers.
Mondrian Arcaya will anchor the major new development in Vilamoura. Set amid the Algarve’s natural landscape, Arcaya will combine residential living, hospitality, retail, and leisure into a sustainable, year-round destination that reflects the region’s character while appealing to both locals and international visitors.
The announcement comes at a time of huge momentum for the Algarve region: In 2024, the area set new records across key tourism indicators, welcoming 5.2 million guests and nearly 10 million airport passengers, according to the Algarve Tourism Board. Demand for golf, a regional mainstay, also hit new highs with over 1.4 million rounds played. With Portugal on track to exceed 33 million international visitors in 2025, Vilamoura is increasingly viewed as a gateway to the Algarve’s rising luxury lifestyle scene.
“This is a major step forward for the Mondrian brand and a proud moment for Ennismore,” said Phil Zrihen, head of Americas and brand COO for Mondrian. “The Algarve’s rich culture and globally sought-after lifestyle make it an ideal setting.”
The project represents a new tier of experiential stay in southern Portugal, especially for design-savvy luxury clients. “Arcaya will be a living, breathing community—open year-round, rooted in nature, and designed for a new generation seeking inspiration, wellbeing, and meaningful connection,” added Bondstone CEO Paulo Loureiro.
Once complete, Mondrian Arcaya will join the brand’s growing portfolio of culture-forward hotels in destinations like London, Miami, Cannes, and Seoul, placing Vilamoura firmly among them.
