Wilderness is deepening its East African footprint with the announcement of Wilderness Mara and Wilderness Mara Villas, two highly anticipated luxury camps set to open in Kenya’s Masai Mara beginning mid-2026. The new properties mark a thoughtful evolution of the legendary Governors’ camps, which have long set a benchmark for authentic safari experiences in the region.
Located at the base of the Oloololo Escarpment in the heart of the famed Mara Triangle, Wilderness Mara is a completely rebuilt camp on the former site of Little Governors’ Camp. Its prime location offers rare access to both sides of the Mara River, positioning guests within one of the most wildlife-dense corners of the greater Masai Mara ecosystem, including a front-row seat to the annual Great Migration.
Twelve tented suites will be discreetly arranged along a seasonal marsh, each designed for immersion in the surrounding landscape. Expect canvas-wrapped comfort with freestanding tubs, outdoor showers, and expansive decks that invite the local wildlife (and uninterrupted views) in. The adults-only setup is ideal for couples or solo travelers seeking serenity and privacy.
Beyond game drives, the camp will offer a suite of elevated amenities including a spa, gym, and in-camp photo studio, a nod to today’s experience-forward traveler. Balloon safaris and cultural visits to nearby Maasai manyattas add further depth to the offering.
The Mara Triangle’s conservation-first approach, with limited lodge numbers, rigorous anti-poaching policies, and community-managed tourism, makes it a standout within Kenya’s safari landscape. “Now, Wilderness is proud to honour and evolve that heritage—blending classic East African charm with elevated, low-impact luxury,” said Hein Prinsloo, Wilderness Kenya’s chief executive officer.
In February of next year, the brand will debut Wilderness Mara Villas, a private-use retreat on the former Governors’ Private Camp site. Set along a secluded bend of the Mara River, the exclusive villa property is designed for multi-generational families or groups seeking a more intimate and custom safari experience.
Both openings are underpinned by Wilderness’s Impact framework, which supports conservation, education, and empowerment initiatives in partnership with local communities.
